The Extremadura GEM Team was formed in 2002, as a progression of previous activities; courses, seminars, research projects, and relationships with stakeholders.

The first GEM Report on Extremadura was published in 2004, and subsequently 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Initially, the team was composed of Dr. Ricardo Hernández (director) and Dr. Juan Carlos Díaz (technical director). On January 1st, Dr. Ricardo Hernández became the Coordinator of the Spanish Regional Team Network. In 2003, the Extremadura Team became a member of the Spanish GEM Team, at the same time as Cataluña and Andalucía.

In 2004, the Consejo GEM Extremadura was created, composed of companies, institutions, trade unions, foundations and newspapers, with the aim of increasing the entrepreneurial spirit in the region of Extremadura, disseminating the GEM Reports and garnering sponsorship for the GEM Project in Extremadura.

In September 2006, the team led the first workshop based on GEM research.
