GEM

Academic Impact

GEM is one of the world’s foremost cross-national collaborative social science research projects. With a growing archive of high-quality data and a network of entrepreneurship experts, GEM has had a significant impact on the field of entrepreneurship scholarship.

GEM Based Articles in International Peer-Reviewed Journals

GEM data is used to address many different themes. For example:

- The influencing factors of entrepreneurship;
- The link between entrepreneurship and national - or regional - economic performance;
- The interplay between institutions, entrepreneurship and development;
- The different types of entrepreneurship, and the effects on economic growth at different stages of economic development

GEM is increasingly being integrated into high quality scholarship. A search on Google Scholar, which collects internet-based academic-related literature, yields over 8,000 results. This includes GEM Global, National and Special Topic reports, but also a great number of articles and papers based on GEM data. These appear in academic journals such as The Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and the Journal of International Business Studies.

The authorship of GEM-based research is widening. Articles and papers based on GEM are published primarily by members of the GEM network of National Teams; however, more and more articles are being published by scholars from outside of the GEM community who have made use of the publicly-available data.

GEM-based research is published in a variety of languages. While much of this academic output to date is in English, we are seeing articles published in a growing range of languages. Spanish is particularly well-represented - GEM teams exist in most countries in the Spanish-speaking world – but papers have been published in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Serbian, Slovenian and others.
