Global Entrepreneurship Monitor is celebrating 25 years as the world foremost study on entrepreneurship. The organization’s new board is enthusiastic about building on this foundation to propel GEM to even greater influence on entrepreneurship research in the years and decades ahead.
Jeff Shay, Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College, has taken over as board chair of the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association (GERA, the legal entity of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor).
“GEM has an incredible history and many traditions,” Shay said. “My goal is to work with the board and national teams to continue our successful practices and activities, but to also challenge all of us to consider the ways in which we, as stewards of GEM, can strive to continue to innovate and make the project even more impactful.”
Christian Friedl, Head of the GEM Austria Team and Associate Professor for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the FH Joanneum University, was elected a board member during the GEM Annual Meeting held earlier this year in Morocco.
He shared: “GEM’s rich foundation enables nuanced longitudinal analysis and offers untapped potential for utilizing AI to unearth new patterns, and even developing forecasting models to further enhance our understanding of global entrepreneurship dynamics. I eagerly anticipate taking on new challenges and seizing opportunities ahead. GEM can reach even greater levels so it remains the world's leading entrepreneurship study – for the next 25 years and beyond!”
Rounding out the board are existing members Ana Fernandez Laviada, Professor at the Universidad de Cantabria and President of Observatorio del Emprendimiento de España; Anna Tarnawa, Head of the Research and Strategy Unit in the Analysis and Strategy Department of the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development; and Niels Bosma, Associate Professor at the Utrecht University School of Economics (non-voting member).
GEM Executive Director Aileen Ionescu-Somers concluded: “We look forward to collaborating with Jeff and Christian – along with the GEM-GERA Board as a whole – to ensure GEM remains a world renowned reference for entrepreneurship scholars and policymakers. Together we aim to strengthen GEM’s global impact through outreach, partnerships and a growing network of researchers committed to changing the entrepreneurship world for the better.”
