Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the world’s largest and longest-running research study on levels of entrepreneurial activity, will be unveiling its annual Global Report on 13 February 2024 at the Hassan II University of Casablanca. The Report provides a snapshot on the state of entrepreneurship in 49 countries based on survey responses from over 138,000 individuals.
The Report Launch, to be hosted by the GEM Morocco Team, will feature keynote addresses from:
- Younes Sekkouri, Minister for Economic Inclusion, Small Businesses, Employment and Skills
- Abdellatif Miraoui, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation
- Abdellatif Mazouz, President of the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council
- Véronique Petit, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium in Morocco
- Chakib Alj, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises
- Houssine Azeddoug, President of Hassan II University, Casablanca
Morocco joined GEM in 2015 and has been continuously involved in the project since then. The country's hosting of this year’s Global Report launch coincides with a significant milestone in GEM's history – its 25th anniversary. Since GEM started in 1999, researchers have surveyed close 4 million entrepreneurs in over 120 economies. Policymakers glean valuable insights on how to foster entrepreneurship by leveraging GEM’s consistent, coherent and contemporary data presented across different economies and through time.
“We are very excited that this 2023/24 GEM Global Report Launch will be taking place on the African continent for the first time,” said José Ernesto Amorós, Chair of the Board, Global Entrepreneurship Research Association. “We are most grateful to our colleagues at GEM Morocco and the Hassan II University of Casablanca for providing this great opportunity that will contribute to boosting GEM’s presence in Africa.”
“Morocco's selection as the host country for the launch of the GEM 2023/2024 Global Report is testament to the country’s ongoing efforts to promote entrepreneurship,” said Abdellatif Komat, Dean of the Hassan II University Casablanca's Faculty of Law, Economics, and Social Sciences. “It is a significant accomplishment for our GEM Morocco team, which has been conducting annual GEM surveys since 2015 through our Entrepreneurship & SME Reserach Center.”
Over 25 years, GEM has been able to fulfill the essential role of independent and objective messenger to decision-makers for what the meticulously collected data reveals, entirely free of political mandates. The GEM approach is unique in assessing attitudes and perceptions related to entrepreneurship in society at the individual level.
The GEM Global Report has been unveiled at annual launch events held in different cities across the globe over the years. Key audiences that engage with this prestigious event include policymakers, GEM’s academic researchers from around the world, decision-makers at international organisations, entrepreneurs and journalists.
“Entrepreneurs identify and exploit new opportunities, create new jobs and tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems,” said Aileen Ionescu-Somers, GEM Executive Director. “The Report Launch is a special occasion that shines a spotlight on the best practices to foster entrepreneurship that propels growth and prosperity.”
In addition to the Report Launch, GEM Morocco will also host the GEM Research Seminar on Monday 12 February. The theme is Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship. On 14 February, the GEM Annual Meeting will take place.
In addition to Hassan II University of Casablanca, the events are sponsored by Morocco’s Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills as well as Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation.

GEM is the only global research source that collects data on entrepreneurship directly from individual entrepreneurs! GEM’s Adult Population Survey (APS) provides analysis on the characteristics, motivations and ambitions of individuals starting businesses, as well as social attitudes towards entrepreneurship. The National Expert Survey (NES) looks at the national context in which individuals start businesses.
In numbers, GEM is:
- 24 years of data
- 150,000+ interviews a year
- 120+ economies
- 370+ specialists in entrepreneurship research
- 150+ academic and research institutions
- 150+ funding institutions
GEM began in 1999 as a joint project between Babson College (USA) and London Business School (UK). The consortium has become the richest resource of information on entrepreneurship, publishing a range of global, national and 'special topic' reports on an annual basis.
