Based on the income levels set out by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its Global Competitiveness Report. However, the groupings are slightly different due to the numbers of economies covered. For GEM, the low income group contains both those classified as low income and lower middle by WEF, and the middle income group has those that WEF groups as upper middle. • This Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) United States National Report is based on the 25th survey of entrepreneurship worldwide, conducted in 2023. Each year, GEM research teams in each participating economy oversee surveys of the adult population. These surveys produce data on rates of participation across phases of business startup and ownership, characteristics of entrepreneurs and their businesses, and the entrepreneurial attitudes, affiliations, and self-perceptions of people in a society. Research teams in over 120 economies have participated in GEM since its inception. The Babson College-based GEM U.S. team has administered GEM in the United States each year since its first survey in 1999.

  • The latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2022-2023 USA report published by Babson College shows that total rates of entrepreneurship activity in the country hit all-time highs in 2022. Rates surged 18% for women and 20% for men. The annual USA report tracks entrepreneurship rates, characteristics, attitudes and self-perceptions about starting businesses, across all genders, race/ethnicity and age groups. The research aims to continually educate and inform policymakers, practitioners, and other audiences who are helping to shape the future of the business world. This year’s GEM report, which polled more than 2,000 U.S. adults in the summer of 2022, shows young entrepreneurs drove the surge.

  • The GEM USA 2021 Report results indicate that over 30 million Americans were starting or running new businesses at the time of the survey, around six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, and that 19.5 million were running established businesses. This illustrates the impact entrepreneurs have on generating a source of income for their families, jobs for others, growth for the U.S. economy, and valued products and services for society. However, 4.4% of the U.S. adult population, the equivalent of 8.7 million people, reported closing a business in the prior year, revealing that some businesses did not work out or simply reached the end of their life cycle. Environment shocks such as that associated with COVID-19 can impose detrimental effects on the business community, or they can lead to structural change, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs.
